Misconceptions About BOTOX®

For the last twenty years, BOTOX® has been safely used around the world to correct facial wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes, nose, and lips. BOTOX® is one of our most popular non-invasive treatments, and our patients regularly approach us with questions regarding things they have heard or found on the internet. To help debunk some of the myths surrounding this highly requested cosmetic injectable, we have put together a list of the most common misconceptions about BOTOX®.

Myth: The Results of BOTOX® Are Immediately Noticeable

The results of BOTOX® are not instant. They develop gradually – between seven to ten days following your procedure. Additionally, the time it takes for results to show varies from person to person and depends on a variety of factors, such as a patient’s age, muscle mass, and skin elasticity.

Myth: The Results of BOTOX® are Permanent

BOTOX® results are not permanent. This is because the components of BOTOX® are body-safe and naturally biodegradable. BOTOX® will eventually be broken down and released by the body through its natural waste system anywhere from three to six months. We usually recommend that our patients schedule maintenance appointments every six months or so, as needed.

Myth: Only Women Get BOTOX®

Of course not! Both men and women are prone to wrinkles and fine lines, and BOTOX® is appropriate to treat these issues for everyone, regardless of gender. Both our male and female patients can enjoy the age-defying benefits of BOTOX® as well as our other non-invasive and surgical treatments.

Myth: BOTOX® Makes You Look Frozen

Getting BOTOX® from a highly-trained, highly-qualified, professionally-licensed clinician will ensure that you will naturally look more youthful and not frozen.

Myth: BOTOX® Is Painful

For most patients, BOTOX® is not painful. Though it is generally tolerable, everyone has different pain thresholds. If you feel that you may be prone to pain during your BOTOX® procedure, our medical specialists can provide a topical anesthetic to ensure your comfort.

Myth: BOTOX® Is Unsafe

Some people mistakenly believe that BOTOX® is unsafe because it contains botulinum toxin; however, the levels of this compound are harmless and non-toxic. BOTOX® is one of the safest cosmetic procedures. It is approved by the FDA for use in 98 countries and has been used around the world for the last twenty years.

Myth: I Should Only Get BOTOX® When I Start Seeing Fine Lines and Wrinkles

While you should consider BOTOX® to treat your fine lines and wrinkles, when you see them, BOTOX® can offer more preventative anti-aging benefits if you start it even before your wrinkles appear. This is because it can train your muscles to not create the facial expressions that cause these lines.

Myth: BOTOX® Only Works for Wrinkles and Fine Lines

Though it is most popularly used by our clients to treat facial wrinkles and fine lines such as forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines, BOTOX® has a variety of applications beyond anti-aging. It can lift the eyebrows, treat dimples on the chin, reduce a gummy smile, and soften the jawline. It is also used to treat various medical conditions caused by involuntary muscle movements, such as overactive bladder and lazy eyes. BOTOX® is also an effective treatment for migraines.
