An arm lift, or brachioplasty, can help you achieve the slim, toned upper arms you want after undergoing physical changes resulting from age, weight fluctuations, or pregnancy. Before Your Arm Lift

Prior to having arm lift surgery, you will have a consultation with Dr. Daniel. During this time, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss your main concerns regarding your arms, the results that you hope to see, and any other questions you may have. Dr. Daniel will also let you know the approach that he feels would best suit your needs, including arm lift incision placement.

For some patients, Dr. Daniel recommends liposuction as part of the brachioplasty procedure. Liposuction removes subcutaneous fat from the arms prior to removing excess skin for more refined upper arm contours.

Your Arm Lift Procedure

Arm lifts may be recommended for patients who are bothered by loose tissue on the upper arms, typically caused by:

  • Major weight loss
  • Post-pregnancy body changes
  • The natural effects of aging

The rear of the arm, in particular, is one of the places on the body that can be the most difficult to target with specific diet and exercise. As a result, cosmetic surgery may be the best and most straightforward way to address the problem.

The arm lift involves an incision that is located on the inner or bottom of the upper arm, or may simply be hidden in the armpit. Brachioplasty smoothes the contours of the arm and gives them a leaner, younger appearance. The arm lift may be performed with or without liposuction to remove the excess fat deposits.

The surgery is usually performed under light general anesthesia or intravenous sedation to ensure maximum patient comfort during the procedure. The ideal incision line is first marked along the arm in the chosen position and cleaned thoroughly before the incision is made.

Excess tissue and skin are removed, and the underlying tissues are held into their new, tighter position with internal sutures. The skin is then tightened and stitched into place using fine dissolvable sutures for minimal scarring.

Healing Process for Your Arm Lift

The recovery period following an arm lift procedure varies based on the extent of the surgery and your body’s natural healing response. Dr. Daniel and his staff will walk through your expected recovery timeline following the procedure, giving you personal recommendations.

Typically, there will be bandaging and possibly a compression garment to reduce swelling, which should diminish in a few weeks. Only light activity should be performed in the days following the surgery, with more strenuous activity resumed in a few weeks. Most can return to desk work in a week.

After your brachioplasty, you should notice a significant improvement in the shape and feel of your arm contours. You should also have smoother skin surrounding the arms, as well as a tighter and more toned arm shape. Your final results often give the entire upper body a fitter, more youthful appearance.

Arm Lift Surgery FAQs

  • Anyone who is in good overall health and wishes to improve the contours and appearance of their upper arms may be a good candidate for arm lift surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Daniel can assess your arm skin tone and discuss the improvement you can realistically expect.

  • Whether liposuction is the best treatment will depend on the tone and condition of the skin and tissue in your upper arms. Removing fat from the arms when the skin is loose won’t likely yield a satisfactory result. An arm lift is typically the best option when a significant amount of loose skin exists.

  • Depending on your unique anatomy, incorporating liposuction into your arm lift may help deliver even better results. Once the excess skin is removed, liposuction can often be used to target and remove fat deposits and sculpt slimmer, more beautiful contours in the upper arms.

  • As with any plastic surgery, an arm lift does require incisions and therefore you will have scars. However, every effort is made to minimize the appearance of the scars which will continue to fade in the months following surgery. The scar will be on the underside of the arm, against the body. Most people feel that the overall improvement they have in the appearance of their arms is well worth the minimal scarring that results.

  • After your surgery, your arms will be wrapped with bandages for several days. After the bandages are removed, Dr. Daniel may ask you to wear compression garments for several weeks to help reduce swelling, support incision healing and encourage skin tightening. There will be some discomfort after surgery, but most people have no trouble controlling their discomfort with over-the-counter or prescription medications.

  • How long the recovery process will take varies from person to person. However, most people are able to return to light, daily activities within a few days, and you can likely return to work about a week after surgery. More strenuous activities, such as exercise, will need to be avoided for several weeks. Dr. Daniel will assess how quickly you’re healing and advise you on when it’s safe to return to work, exercise, and other activities.
