Drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes can make you look older or more tired than you feel. Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, can create a refreshed appearance by smoothing excess skin and tissue while reducing bags under the eyes.

In addition to eyelid surgery, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Lee B. Daniel offers a full range of cosmetic surgery options for the face and body. With the help of his team of professionals at Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Dr. Daniel has performed customized procedures for thousands of men and women, bringing out the best in his patients. If you’re considering eyelid surgery, call our office in Eugene and ask about a blepharoplasty procedure.

Before Your Eyelid Surgery

Before your eyelid surgery appointment, you will meet with Dr. Daniel for a pre-surgical consultation. At your consultation, you can discuss your goals for eyelid surgery, and Dr. Daniel will explain the best approach for meeting your needs.

The best candidates for eyelid surgery may have:

  • Puffy bags below the eyes

  • Drooping upper lids with extra skin

  • Lower eyelid wrinkles

Dr. Daniel can often create a brighter appearance by combining eyelid surgery with a facelift or brow lift to further revitalize the face and improve the signs of aging. If crow’s feet are a concern, Dr. Daniel may recommend scheduling BOTOX® injections several weeks after eyelid surgery for more comprehensive results.

Your Eyelid Surgery Procedure

As we age, gravity can cause our eyelids to sag, affecting our appearance and sometimes even interfering with vision. Blepharoplasty can help you look more like your alert, authentic self again by removing excess skin from the eyelids while tightening the muscles surrounding the eyes. He can also remove fat and excess tissue that may contribute to under-eye bags. Eyelid surgery can be performed as a solo surgery or in combination with other procedures.

Upper and lower eyelid surgery requires about two to two-and-a-half hours of operating time typically under general anesthesia. For upper blepharoplasty, Dr. Daniel will make small incisions following the natural creases of the upper eyelid, and lower blepharoplasty uses an incision hidden just below the lashes of the lower lid.

For patients who need just upper eyelid surgery, this procedure can usually be done in the office under only local anesthesia. Upper blepharoplasty may take a little over one hour and is simpler and less expensive than if general anesthesia is used.

Healing Process for Your Eyelid Surgery

The exact recovery process will vary for each patient after eyelid surgery, but you can generally expect around seven to 10 days of recovery time. Most people are able to return to work within a week, depending on the demands of their job, but should avoid strenuous exercise for two weeks.

Dr. Daniel will advise you to keep your head elevated for several days and use cold compresses to reduce swelling and bruising. If you normally wear contact lenses, Dr. Daniel will ask you to wear glasses for the first two weeks following your blepharoplasty.

As swelling diminishes and incision marks fade, you should notice an improvement in your eye appearance. Your eyes may look more accentuated, bringing better balance to your facial features and taking years off of your appearance.
