Before Your Otoplasty Procedure

Before your otoplasty appointment, you will have a brief consultation with Dr. Daniel regarding your procedure. During this time, you can talk with Dr. Daniel about your goals for cosmetic ear surgery and ask him questions about your procedure and the recovery process. He will also physically assess your ears and facial structure to help determine the best approach for your needs.

Unlike most cosmetic surgery procedures, ear pinning is commonly performed in children as well as adults and teens with fully developed ears. Generally, the ears finish maturing around the age of five or six, making this the youngest age for otoplasty candidacy.

During Your Ear Pinning Surgery

Protruding, prominent ears can appear out of proportion to the head and face. While harmless, this can create feelings of self-consciousness, especially in children who may be frequently teased by their peers. Otoplasty brings protruding ears closer to the head, which helps resolve the distracting appearance that can lead to social embarrassment.

To reposition the ears, Dr. Daniel makes an incision in the back of the ear to expose the cartilage. The cartilage is sculpted or folded as needed, and the final shape is secured with permanent stitches. In some cases, cartilage may be removed to give the ear a natural-looking fold. The ears will then appear closer to the head and more symmetrical with respect to the rest of the face.

Otoplasty can be performed using local or general anesthesia. In many cases, children receive a general anesthetic to sleep through the procedure, which can last for one to two hours. Older children and adults commonly receive local anesthesia in combination with a sedative and remain awake during the procedure.

Healing Process for Your Otoplasty

After your ear pinning surgery, bandages are placed around the head to hold the ears in their new position. These will be switched out for a light head dressing after three to five days. Results are immediately evident once bandages are removed. While there may still be some swelling at this time, most adults can return to work without a dressing. Most children can return to school after a week.

During recovery from ear surgery, you should limit activities in which the ears may be accidentally bent or moved. You will be asked to wear a protective headband or sweatband at night to prevent the ears from being pulled or bent as you sleep. Any swelling should continue to gradually subside over the first few months following surgery.

After your otoplasty, you should feel more confident about your appearance. Children often experience a decrease in teasing, which, in turn, aids in the development of positive self-esteem. Many adults who undergo otoplasty feel that their entire facial appearance improves as a result of having less prominent ears.
