Botox injections aren’t just for the ladies anymore. More and more men are stopping by their local plastic surgeon’s office for a quick freshening up.
In 2010 alone, more men choose Botox injections than any other cosmetic procedure. “Brotox” as it’s frequently called, saw a 258 percent increase between 2000 and 2010 according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
For some plastic surgeons, the recent influx is no surprise:
“I think the stigma of it to men has dropped,” said Dr. Stephen B. Baker, an associate professor of plastic surgery at Georgetown University. “These days, you can get it done everywhere but a gas station, and maybe in some states even there.”
According to Dr. John Sherman, a clinical assistant professor of surgery at the Weill Cornell Medical College, men are choosing Botox injections because it’s a fast and effective way to smooth out wrinkles between the eyebrows that may otherwise make them look angry.
Many plastic surgeons agree that men are more interested in targeting specific facial regions, than a complete facial makeover.
“Men want a little more subtlety than women,” Sherman said. “They want movement of the face, but they don’t want deep furrows in their forehead.”
Men may also like Botox injections because are relatively cost effective (usually $200-300 per session) and the results are temporary – so there’s no risk of permanent damage.
